ASTHMA MEDICATION RENEWAL

You qualify for this treatment if…

  • You are between the age of 5-64.
  • You have previously been diagnosed with asthma.
  • You require a prescription refill or your asthma medication has expired.
  • You have taken your medication within the past 12 months.
  • Your asthma symptoms have been well-controlled (definition below) for the past 4 weeks.
  • *You are NOT experiencing an active asthma attack. *If you are experiencing severe symptoms like shortness of breath, please call 911 or go to an emergency room as soon as possible.

Definition of well-controlled asthma.

Your asthma symptoms require a rescue inhaler NO MORE than 2 days per week
Your asthma does NOT wake you up more than 2 nights per month
Your lung function is normal or within 20% of your best (PEF or FEV1). This is measured by peak expiratory flow or spirometry.
In the past 12 months, you have NOT had more than one asthma exacerbation where you needed oral glucocorticoids and/or urgent medical care
You ARE able to do all your normal activities

*If you do NOT meet these criteria or you needed to take oral steroids or receive urgent medical care within the past 4 weeks, you will NOT be able to get a new prescription for your asthma medication.*

What to expect from your Virtual Visit

Your Virtual Visit may include a prescription renewal for an asthma medication that has worked well for you in the past 12 months. Your Provider will NOT prescribe oral steroids, biologics, allergy shots, or any prescription medications you have not tried before. They also will NOT prescribe medical equipment like a nebulizer.

Medications typically prescribed

  • Albuterol sulfate (Ventolin, Proventil)
  • Fluticasone-salmeterol (Advair HFA, Advair Diskus)
  • Ipratropium bromide (Atrovent)
